Owen flung open my curtains the next morning.

I groaned as I turned over. Everything hurt. I had slept until almost dawn in the chair with Keir. Then woke when he was lifting me to carry me to my bed. But the damage was done by then; my back and neck were not happy with anything other than my overly pillowed bed, evidently.

“You need to get up,” he demanded.

I groaned. I was expecting him to be bossy and commanding for our trip to Nerede in a few days, but I could’ve slept longer today. I wasn’t expected in the common rooms for another few hours.

“Dammit, please, Jorah.”

I heard some panic laced into his tone and that had me opening my eyes.

“You always tell me to sleep, now you’re telling me not to. Which is it, Owen?”

He didn’t smirk or smile. “You have fifteen minutes to get yourself ready.”

The door opened and shut and then Silvia was there, helping me out of bed.

“For what?” I asked Owen.

He closed his eyes. “You have been summoned to the king.”

That had me stopping, feeling a lightheadedness that had nothing to do with sitting up too fast. “What?”

He shrugged. “For a luncheon.”

“But it’s still morning,” I argued.

He shook his head. “I have no idea what’s going on, Jorah. I just know I can’t tell him no.”

Silvia was pulling me into the bathroom while a thousand worst case scenarios ran through my head. Did he know Keir fell asleep in my room the night before? Was this related to what Renna said about the king actually being nice? Or did he figure out we had been playing cards in my room secretly?

“Hurry, dear,” Silvia encouraged as I used the lavatory and tried to get rid of my morning breath.

She made quick work of taking my hair out and trying to style it. It wasn’t gentle work, but it was record speed, so I didn’t even mind all the yanking and jerking on my already sore neck. I was pretty sure the red mark on my cheek was an impression from the pillow, and though I rubbed it, I had no idea if it would even be gone by the time we had to leave for the king.

In five more minutes, I had some makeup to cover my dark circles and some lip shimmer on, and then we were heading for the door.

Owen gave Silvia a nod. “You know what to do. Go tell the princes what’s going on. Only trust The Six or the princes themselves.”

We had almost reached the doorknob when I grabbed Owen’s arm.

“What did I do wrong?” I whispered, trying not to cry.

He shook his head. “You did nothing wrong, Jorah.”

I took a shaky breath. “Okay.”

“We will walk slowly,” Owen instructed me. “And then we will stall. Do not eat or drink anything the king offers you. Keir will be there as quickly as possible.”

I gave him a nod. Stall. All I had to do was stall. I could do that. I could face
