Owen flung open my curtains the next morning.
I groaned as I turned over. Everything hurt. I had slept until almost dawn in the chair with Keir. Then woke when he was lifting me to carry me to my bed. But the damage was done by then; my back and neck were not happy with anything other than my overly pillowed bed, evidently.
âYou need to get up,â he demanded.
I groaned. I was expecting him to be bossy and commanding for our trip to Nerede in a few days, but I couldâve slept longer today. I wasnât expected in the common rooms for another few hours.
âDammit, please, Jorah.â
I heard some panic laced into his tone and that had me opening my eyes.
âYou always tell me to sleep, now youâre telling me not to. Which is it, Owen?â
He didnât smirk or smile. âYou have fifteen minutes to get yourself ready.â
The door opened and shut and then Silvia was there, helping me out of bed.
âFor what?â I asked Owen.
He closed his eyes. âYou have been summoned to the king.â
That had me stopping, feeling a lightheadedness that had nothing to do with sitting up too fast. âWhat?â
He shrugged. âFor a luncheon.â
âBut itâs still morning,â I argued.
He shook his head. âI have no idea whatâs going on, Jorah. I just know I canât tell him no.â
Silvia was pulling me into the bathroom while a thousand worst case scenarios ran through my head. Did he know Keir fell asleep in my room the night before? Was this related to what Renna said about the king actually being nice? Or did he figure out we had been playing cards in my room secretly?
âHurry, dear,â Silvia encouraged as I used the lavatory and tried to get rid of my morning breath.
She made quick work of taking my hair out and trying to style it. It wasnât gentle work, but it was record speed, so I didnât even mind all the yanking and jerking on my already sore neck. I was pretty sure the red mark on my cheek was an impression from the pillow, and though I rubbed it, I had no idea if it would even be gone by the time we had to leave for the king.
In five more minutes, I had some makeup to cover my dark circles and some lip shimmer on, and then we were heading for the door.
Owen gave Silvia a nod. âYou know what to do. Go tell the princes whatâs going on. Only trust The Six or the princes themselves.â
We had almost reached the doorknob when I grabbed Owenâs arm.
âWhat did I do wrong?â I whispered, trying not to cry.
He shook his head. âYou did nothing wrong, Jorah.â
I took a shaky breath. âOkay.â
âWe will walk slowly,â Owen instructed me. âAnd then we will stall. Do not eat or drink anything the king offers you. Keir will be there as quickly as possible.â
I gave him a nod. Stall. All I had to do was stall. I could do that. I could face
